“The Heart of the Beholder”

The memory is a funny thing when it comes to our relationships. I am reminded of a phrase I have heard from many a senior, “She is as beautiful as the day I met her.” And you know what? She is. The light in her eyes is still there, her expressions are the same, her voice, her smile, and the way she communicates with her movements are still a beautiful young woman with a whole life ahead.

Friendships are the same. (If you have come to just my blog, click the menu and ‘Home’ for an eye- opening visual). I have known this person since I was 3 years old and when I am with her, we are wiser, but we are the same.

We must never take for granted the things the heart can see.

Like most of what I write, there was an impetus for this deep thought. I was at work and an elderly woman approached me saying she couldn’t find her friend. So naturally I asked, “What does she look like?” The elderly woman says, “She has blonde hair.” We walked a few more steps and she points to another elderly woman with a full head of undoubtably gray hair and says, “There she is!”

The memory of the heart is unique in every relationship. While our eyes serve us well, we must not use them to see people, to see relationships. For these we must use our hearts.
